Models Own Velvet Goth Collection

Greetings All!

I've had these swatches ready for over a week, as I was very excited about this collection. It ticks so many boxes for me. Matte, glitter, jelly, dark colours, goth in the title - how could I go wrong?!

I'm aware that this post could become very long, so I'm just going to dive straight in, and try and keep the waffling to a minimum!

Where to begin?! I guess with some housekeeping. All of these swatches are 2 coats. They applied fairly easily - some were a little bit more gloopy than others, but nothing unmanageable. They dried very quickly, as with most matte polishes, and a topcoat really transforms them. However if you want to retain the matte look, although the polishes are glitter laden, they dry very smooth. They have an adorable velvet cap, which seems like a great idea,. but I found that within minutes it had acted as a cat hair magnet, and I imagine they'll end up looking pretty filthy!

Absinthe is a dark, forest green with green and silver glitter. This is it solo.

And with topcoat.

This one reminds me of a haunted wood. But that's pretty obvious, right? It's that classic haunted forest green colour lol. I do love it matte, but with topcoat it just comes alive in such a beautiful way. This is one of my favourites of the collection.

Amethyst is a royal purple with silver and purple glitter. Although many of the polishes have a similar glitter mix, they still all look fairly different. This is it solo.

And with topcoat.

Again, there is a huge difference with topcoat. It's a bit like polishing a gemstone that has gotten slightly dusty. There is something very Gothic about this one matte though. It's so moody, and I love it!

Obsidian was the surprise loser of the bunch. I assumed I would love this black jelly with silver and holographic glitter. We were going to become great friends, and I was going to wear it all the time! But, it was not meant to be.

Solo

With topcoat.

Firstly, this was the worst to apply, very thick and gloopy (you can see it's a little lumpy). It's also the sheerest of the three, and I nearly needed three coats. It has this horrid yellowish brownish tinge to it, which I don't like. Even topcoat doesn't save it. I'm beyond gutted! I wanted this to be amazing, and it's only mediocre. Of the five, I could live without this one.

Sardonyx is a deep red, although not as Gothic as it could be, with red glitter and also a tiny sprinkling of black. Solo.

With topcoat.

This is much more like it. A stunning deep red, that gets darker with multiple coats. I think it would also probably look amazing over black. It looks so good with topcoat - imagine that blood was glittery (mine may well be!) and you've got it.

Lastly is a surprising winner, Valerian, a deep blue with silver and blue glitter. I was expecting to be fairly apathetic about this colour, but actually I love it! Solo.

With topcoat.

This is another one of those 'night sky effect' polishes, which I can't get enough of! Although it's all deep and dark, when left matte it's very soft and delicate at the same time, and it has so much depth with topcoat!

So there you go. Blue is best, and black is disappointing. What is going on?! I also have a terrible confession - I prefer these with topcoat. Gasp! While I do love a matte finish, I think I love jellies more, and you lose quite a bit of the jelly with a matte finish. They aren't two finishes I would choose to put together.

I'm hoping that most of these will get a lot of wear in the coming months. They are very dark and moody, and hopefully I'll work them into some Halloween manicures. I would recommend all but the black!

    1. It seems like a shame because it 'wastes' the matte finish of them, but they look sooo good!

    1. The caps are lovely, but I don't think they'll stay that way for long - they seem like dirt magnets!

  3. These are all so pretty, but the velvet caps do seem a little strange.

  4. I've only tried Obsidian so far and I'm in love with it! It's glittery but not too girly, which suits my mood a lot of the time. Shame you didn't like it! Just shows how we all have differing tastes / experiences. It's all good. :)

I have all but the green from this collection, can't wait to try the others.

  5. Ooo so pretty! Amethyst is beautiful.... But then I'm purple obsessed. I do love absinthe simply for the name Haha. I think you're right there's something a little weird about obsidian, it's kinda...dull. Sigh, guess I'll wait patiently for payday lol.
